John, the founder of What’s The Joke, developed a love for comedy in the late 1980s in Melbourne, Australia. He and his friends went to a comedy show at the Last Laugh in Carlton, where he discovered popular comic Rachel Berger. Since then, he has attended comedy festivals and shows across the country. When he’s not watching comedy, he enjoys having a laugh with his friends.
In 2018, John had a chance encounter with legendary Australian comic Dave O’Neil, which led to him booking Dave and fellow comedian Dave Thornton to perform at his child’s school fundraiser. The show was a big hit, and other parents from the school approached John to book Dave and other comedians for various charities and sporting clubs.
With a network of contacts in the industry, John decided to start a comedy booking agency, What’s The Joke, in order to provide comedians for corporate events, sports clubs, schools, social clubs, hotels, bars, pubs, breweries, wineries, charity fundraisers, and private events at affordable prices. Since their first comedy gig in 2018, they have worked with some of Australia’s best comedians, including Dave O’Neil, Dave Hughes, Dave Thornton, Pete Helliar, Nick Cody, Dan Connell, Lizzy Hoo, The Nelson Twins, Chris Franklin, Claire Hooper, Anthony “Lehmo” Lehman, and Richard Stubbs, as well as support acts including Evan Hocking, Johnny Kats, Jarryd Goundrey, Brad Oakes, Nick Capper, Fergus Neal, and Mimi Shaheen.
Based in Victoria, What’s The Joke can provide comedian hire to Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, and regional areas of Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia. If you need a good laugh, just give us a call!
